Understand and Communicate

  • Ask “Why?: Talk to your child to discover if they’re struggling with anxiety, bullying, disengagement, or social isolation; listen with concern, not accusation.

  • Partner with the School: Contact teachers, counselors, or administrators to share insights and create an "attendance success plan,”

  • Clarify the “Why”: Help your child understand that missing school stops them from learning foundational material needed for future success

Set Routines & Expectations

  • Prioritize Sleep and Mornings: Consistent bedtimes and morning routines reduces stress and ensure they are ready for school

  • Make it Non-negotiable: Unless truly sick (not just headaches/stomach aches, which can signal anxiety), attending school is expected.

  • Track absences: Keep tabs on missed school days to see patterns, using school portals (PowerSchool) or calendars, as absences add up fast.

Address Barriers and Motivate

  • Identify True Barriers: Work with the school to tackle issues like transportation, chronic health problems, or lack of support.

  • Boost Engagement: Find non-academic activities (sports, clubs, music, theater) that motivate them to get to school.

  • Offer Small Rewards: Reward consistent attendance (extra free time, special outings, favorite meal). Be creative, find out what motivates them.
