COVID-19 Update 5 (3/13/20)
Posted on 03/13/2020

As you are most likely aware, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to be a significant challenge in certain regions of the world, as well as continues to grow as a concern nationally and locally (numbers of confirmed cases continue to rise in the state of Pennsylvania, thankfully none in Carbon County).

The Jim Thorpe Area School District will be CLOSED starting on Monday, March 16th through Friday, March 27.  School districts across the state of Pennsylvania were directed by Governor Wolf to close their schools in an effort to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus through social isolation.  The hope is that closing schools could reduce the spread of the Coronavirus and to keep our students, and the greater Jim Thorpe Community safe. The rapidly changing circumstances surrounding the Coronavirus requires this type of response.  Even hospitals and health care facilities are taking precautions to limit the impact of COVID-19 on the community.  The decision is made out of the concern for all JTASD students, staff, and families, and especially those who are most vulnerable.  And, the school district recognizes the impact school cancellations have on families and communities.  As the Superintendent, I would rather be overly cautious.

Finally, we encourage you to review and continue to adhere to the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/Pages/Coronavirus.aspx recommendations and guidelines.  We will keep you updated during this complicated time through the All-call system, Emails, Website, and Twitter when school will resume.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Mr. Rushefski
