COVID-19 Update 4 (3/12/20)

COVID-19 Update 4 (3/12/20)
Posted on 03/12/2020

This is an Important Update from the Jim Thorpe Area School District in light of the escalating Coronavirus concerns.

At this time, a decision has been made to halt and discontinue NON-ESSENTIAL programming and practices in the Jim Thorpe Area School District until further notice.

NON-ESSENTIAL practices would include:

  • School Trips and Conferences,
  • School Dances and Concerts,
  • Outside groups using the facilities (auditorium, gymnasiums), and
  • Limited visitation of the schools.

Please note the following important updates:

  • The school district is asking students in grades three through twelve to bring home their technology devices, we will waive any insurance liability on the part of the students.  The administration continues to work with the teachers to prepare students for instruction leveraging the Project OLE one-to-one learning, where students would receive instruction at home.  Presently, the JTASD has not been granted authorization for “Flexible Instructional Days” to count as a day of attendance.  However, we are continuing to develop our plan and Jim Thorpe will apply for permission.  Until we receive authorization from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to use days off as “Flexible Instructional Days”, a school closure would require a make-up day in June.
  • Expect to receive communications from your child’s school principals on updates for their building.  Attention High School Students:  Due to the current situation, water bottles will be permitted at the high school.
  • Please review all communications (e-mails, all calls, and social media) carefully and limit calls to the buildings involving questions and concerns that were not communicated.
  • JTASD will continue to follow all CDC and public health guidelines for students who are traveling, including recommendations for self-quarantine which includes asking families to self-report to the Department of Health 1-877-PA-HEALTH if you are returning from a Level 3 country OR if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19.  We are asking that if you have recently traveled and/or will be traveling to another country, you check the CDC’s guidance for travel restrictions and self-quarantine measures.  The JTASD will insist that any students who are returning from a trip out of the country and/or involving a cruise ship self-quarantine for 14 days.

The health and safety of our JTASD students, faculty, and staff are of utmost importance to us. We will continue to follow district procedures by maintaining our facilities using EPA registered institutional disinfecting materials. We will follow all virus updates and comply with any additional recommendations provided to the district from local, state, or federal health officials.

Everyone in our school community should adhere to the following preventative measures, as recommended by the PA Department of Health:

*Cover coughs or sneezes with your elbow. Do not use your hands!

* Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

*Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones, remotes, and other frequently touched items.

*If your child is sick and running a fever, defined as a temperature greater than or equal to 100 degree Fahrenheit, please keep them out of school until they are fever free for 24 hours without using fever reducing medications.

As always, if you have any concerns regarding your child’s health, it is recommended that you consult with your child’s primary care physician.
